September Opens Portals. Rolling Desks Fill First

Investment banking portals open in August and fill on a rolling desk. A November Fast Stream window is a different clock, not leftover seats.

There are 1 days until the next 1 September portal wave, and JobPing is tracking 13883 live early-career roles across the EU and UK this week. TARGETjobs' 2026 graduate-deadline explainer still treats September and October as the milkround, then immediately splits the board: investment-banking applications often open in August and close as early as October, law runs its own fixed timetable, and employers that print a November deadline may already be reviewing on a rolling desk. The trap is one spreadsheet tab labelled "grad schemes." A Goldman summer that fills in September and a Fast Stream window that opens in October are not the same product. Sequence the clocks. Do not wait for a single autumn.

This guide covers: the five sector clocks TARGETjobs describes on the 2026 deadline page, why Canary Wharf rolling desks make a printed deadline a courtesy, the Fast Stream and magic-circle windows you cannot slide, what still hires after Christmas, and how to sequence applications without burning the first-open pile. The September starts piece is the other end of the year: intakes that already closed. This piece is the application year that is about to open. For Europe-wide visa context, see the international graduate visa sponsorship report. For the pay-and-visa cut of the same Canary Wharf desks, see London finance.

Counts are roles currently active in JobPing's database. The countdown rolls to the following 1 September once that date passes, so the sentence stays true after the portals open. Firm-level dates still come from the career page, not this table.

TARGETjobs Maps Five Sector Clocks, Not One Autumn Deadline

TARGETjobs updated its graduate-deadline guidance on 26 May 2026 and still summarises the traditional milkround as September and October open, winter assessment, spring offers, and a September start the following year. The same page then lists the exceptions that make a single "apply in autumn" poster false.

Investment banking often opens in August and closes as early as October. Law uses a separate solicitor and barrister timetable with fixed deadlines. Many corporates print November and December closes, then extend or reopen if quality applications are thin. Employers with "ongoing recruitment" still expect most of the pile by Christmas; by spring, TARGETjobs says, only less popular schemes in less popular locations tend to remain. First-round interviews cluster in January and February, assessment centres in March and April, offers from April to June. Each employer runs its own version.

That is five clocks wearing one careers-fair banner:

ClockTypical openTypical effective closeDeadline type
Investment banking / markets (2027 summer and analyst)July–AugustSeptember–October, often earlier on popular desksRolling
MBB and strategy consultingAugust–SeptemberOctober, once assessment days fillRolling

Sources: TARGETjobs, when to apply for graduate jobs (26 May 2026); Civil Service Fast Stream how to apply (2026 cycle dates); employer career pages. Firm-level dates move. The table is a sequencing rule, not a substitute for the portal.

So-what: if today is late August and your only plan is "apply when Fast Stream opens," you are already late for the desks that opened in July. If today is November and you are still polishing a JPMorgan form that closed in October, switch products. Get 10 free matches filtered by career path and city so the list includes the mid-market that never sat on any of these five clocks.

The spring-week versus summer fork is a first-year version of the same mistake: treating Easter and June as rivals rather than a sequence. The milkround mistake is treating August and November as one season.

Investment Banking Opens in August and Fills on a Rolling Desk

Canary Wharf graduate and summer-analyst programmes recruit on a rolling desk, which means a printed October close is a courtesy to the people who have not noticed the seat filled in September. LSEG's graduate pages still say they recruit on a rolling basis and that early application is strongly advised. That sentence is the whole front-office calendar.

A rolling desk reads applications as they arrive, books assessment slots as they fill, and stops when the class is full. The careers-service line that "you can apply any time before the deadline" is true only for employers that wait to score the pile. TARGETjobs says some do wait, and some start reviewing and making interview offers before the deadline. Canary Wharf sits in the second group. Submitting at 11:59 pm on the printed day is not a time-management fail. It is an application into a class that may already exist.

The London finance piece is the pay-and-visa cut of the same market. This section is the clock. Summer 2027 analyst programmes open roughly a year ahead. Spring-week applications for Easter sit on the October–November first-year clock, not on the summer-analyst clock. Mixing those two tabs is how first-years miss Easter and penultimate-years miss the summer leftover pile.

Big Four and MBB borrow the mechanic without the August start. Portals open in August or September. Assessment days fill. A November "deadline" on a popular London audit or strategy programme is often a page that has not been updated. Apply in the first two weeks the portal is live, or treat the scheme as closed and move to a practice that still has seats.

If you need visa sponsorship later, rolling does not create paperwork. Fewer than 8% of UK early-career roles in JobPing's database explicitly flag Skilled Worker sponsorship. A September submit at a bank that will not sponsor graduates is still a wasted assessment centre. Check the graduate-hire position before you fall in love with the first-open banner. The international sponsorship report is the country cut.

Fast Stream and Magic Circle Law Run Fixed Windows You Cannot Slide

The Civil Service Fast Stream 2026 cycle opened at midday on 9 October 2025 and closed at midday on 6 November 2025: a four-week fixed window, not a rolling desk you can beat by applying in August. Missing that close is a year, not a week.

Fast Stream's own how-to page is the primary source for the last completed cycle. The 2027 window is expected to open in early October again; the official careers site will publish the dates, and a student blog is not a substitute. You can apply for up to three schemes. Analytical streams still carry the subject rules in which degrees schemes filter. The clock and the subject are separate knockouts. A history graduate who misses the November midday close does not get a January top-up. A maths graduate who applies to GORS in week four of a four-week window is on time.

Magic-circle and other large law firms run vacation-scheme applications in October and November for attendance the following spring or summer, with many training-contract decisions attached to that scheme. TARGETjobs flags law as the profession that keeps fixed deadlines when corporates extend. Treat a January close as real. Treat an August "I'll do law later" as a year lost.

NHS Graduate Management Training and several other public-sector schemes copy the Fast Stream shape: autumn open, November close, no rolling advantage. The FCA, HM Treasury, and the National Audit Office sit near that pattern. If your list is public sector, October is the month, not August.

The 48-hour test window from London finance still applies once you are inside a portal. A Fast Stream application that lands on the last morning still has to survive online tests in November. Do not spend 5 November rewriting a personal statement you could have finished in October. Run the scheme JD through CV Ping the week the window opens, submit in week one, and keep the last fortnight for tests, not for discovering the form.

What Still Hires After Christmas When the Milkround Looks Closed

TARGETjobs says that by spring, typically only less popular schemes in less popular locations still have vacancies, and that individual immediate-start graduate jobs advertise all year. That leftover pile is real. It is not a second chance at the desk that filled in September.

The September starts article is the July version of this fact: bulge-bracket, MBB, magic circle, and Fast Stream intakes for the current September cohort closed months earlier. The mid-market that never had a deadline was still hiring. The same mid-market is hiring now, in late August, while the 2027 milkround portals are opening. You can run both lists in the same week. A rolling operator role that starts in six weeks does not block a Fast Stream application in October.

JobPing's 13883 live early-career roles this week (snapshot 31 August 2026) are mostly not milkround schemes. They are internships, trainee programmes, and mid-market seats that post when headcount appears. Off-cycle London internships turn over every week. EU stages sit on a different calendar again, which is the point of the EU internship timing guide. Treating a Warsaw SSC internship or a Shoreditch fintech analyst seat as if it were a Goldman summer is how people miss roles that were never on the TARGETjobs five-clock table.

Apply on the milkround clock if:

  • Your target is a structured 2027 scheme at a bank, MBB, Big Four, Fast Stream, or magic-circle firm
  • You are a final-year or penultimate-year student in August–November
  • You can submit in the first fortnight the portal is live

Apply on the live board if:

  • The scheme you wanted already printed a close, or the rolling desk is full
  • You have already graduated and need an immediate start
  • You want an operator, SME, or regional seat that never ran a milkround
  • You need a start date this autumn, not September 2027

Do both if you can stand the forms. A March mid-market offer does not cancel an April Fast Stream offer. The Easy Apply versus career pages rule still holds: file on the employer portal, not the green button.

That is why we built JobPing as a loop. Rolling desks and mid-market seats appear on a Tuesday; a printed November deadline does not. Get 10 free matches from the live board, then CV Ping the JD before the 48-hour test window lands.

How to Sequence Autumn Applications Without Burning the Rolling Pile

Write the five clocks on one page before you open LinkedIn, because a perfect CV filed in November for a Canary Wharf programme that filled in September is a diary entry, not an application. Start with the dates. The rest of the milkround only matters if you are still inside the window.

  1. Put August–October banking and consulting on week one of the term, not after reading week. If the portal is open today, that is the application. TARGETjobs' rolling warning is the reason. Get 10 free matches so you are not discovering desks on 30 September.
  2. Hold Fast Stream and law for their published windows. Do not "practise" by submitting a half-ready Fast Stream form in week one of a four-week close. Do practise the tests in September so October is a submit month.
  3. Treat a printed November deadline on a rolling employer as a rumour. Email early-careers and ask whether they are still booking assessment days. If the answer is vague, assume the class is full and move the time to a scheme that is still opening.
  4. Keep a live-board column that never had a milkround clock. Mid-market, operators, regional finance, off-cycle internships. Premium adds 15 fresh matches a week (Mon, Wed, Fri), which matters when those seats appear on a Tuesday.
  5. Tailor before the 48-hour test invite, not during it. A generic CV fails the first-open pile the same way it fails a January leftover. CV Ping against that specific JD, then submit. Free accounts include 3 full analyses; Premium is unlimited for €7/month.
  6. If you need a visa later, check sponsorship before you sequence the clocks. Fewer than 8% of UK early-career roles flag Skilled Worker sponsorship. A perfectly timed September submit at a non-sponsor is still a year of the wrong process.

FAQ

When do UK graduate scheme applications open for 2027 intakes? Most structured programmes open in September and October 2026 for a September 2027 start. Investment banking often opens in July or August. Fast Stream's last completed cycle ran 9 October to 6 November 2025; the next window is expected in early October. Check the employer page, not a generic milkround poster.

Is a printed deadline the real close on a bank scheme? Often not. Rolling desks fill when the class is full. TARGETjobs notes that some employers review and interview before the deadline. Apply in the first fortnight the portal is live if the firm recruits on a rolling basis.

What if I miss the autumn window? You have missed that structured 2027 class at the firms that filled. Immediate-start graduate jobs and mid-market rolling hire continue all year. Some schemes extend or reopen if offers are declined. You can also apply in the next cycle. See September starts for the leftover-pile version of this fact.

When does the Civil Service Fast Stream open? The 2026-entry cycle opened at midday on 9 October 2025 and closed at midday on 6 November 2025. Treat early October as the planning month for the next cycle, and take the dates from the official how-to page when they publish.

Do I apply before or after I graduate? For a scheme starting the September after your final year, apply in the autumn of that final year. If you have already graduated, you can still enter the next cycle at most firms, and you can apply to immediate-start roles now. Some schemes cap how many years after graduation you remain eligible. Read the line.

Should I wait until my CV is perfect? Not past the week a rolling portal opens. Tailor in the first days the listing is live. A polished form into a full class is not an application.
