Video Interviews Cull. Assessment Centres Decide

ISE members now script-check video answers and some have dropped the round. The assessment centre remains the room where the offer is decided.

JobPing is tracking 13883 live early-career roles across the EU and UK this week, and the recorded video interview is a volume tap, not the offer meeting. ISE's 2025 Student Recruitment Survey found 57% of member employers fully automate numerical reasoning and only 15% said they had never suspected cheating in assessments, down from 22% the year before. Claire Tyler's ISE write-up on the application explosion is blunter still: employers are moving online tests before video, and some are removing or reducing video interviews because answers now arrive pre-scripted. The trap is treating HireVue and a Fast Stream Assessment Centre as rival formats you "prefer." They are sequential products. Most people die on the recording. The people left in the room get the offer. Prep them as different exams.

This guide covers: why ISE moved screening in front of the camera, what strengths-based video scores, why the assessment centre is still a human room, what rejects you on each stage, and how to prep the two products without using the same STAR card twice. For the door that gets you into this pipeline, see Easy Apply versus career pages. For the academic knockouts that happen before any camera turns on, see the 2:1 filter and subject filters. For Europe-wide visa context, see the international graduate visa sponsorship report. For the 48-hour finance test window that often lands in the same week as HireVue, see London finance.

ISE Moved Screening Before the Video Because 140 Applications Broke the Inbox

ISE members now see 140 applications per graduate vacancy, the highest since 1991, and Claire Tyler's 2025 application-explosion briefing says employers are putting automated tests in front of video so a recruiter never watches a recording that already failed SHL. That is the order. Test, then camera, then a human room.

Two decades ago the same ISE series sat at 38 applications per vacancy. Retail, FMCG, and tourism now run at 290 applications per hire; health and pharmaceuticals at 220. Legal and built environment sit nearer 69 and 73. Volume is not uniform, but the response is: move the cheap filter earlier. ISE's AI briefing is the mechanism. Numerical reasoning is fully automated at 57% of members, situational judgement at 53%, verbal at 49%. In-person interviews, group tasks, role play, and case studies stay 94–100% human. Video sits in the messy middle: cheap enough to send to thousands, expensive enough that employers are now refusing to watch AI-scripted takes.

The same ISE AI note says 33% of employers are already redesigning selection because of generative AI, and 46% are reviewing. The most commonly reported misconduct is candidates using AI during interviews without disclosure (61% of those who saw cheating). A quarter of employers now think AI is cheaper than people for equivalent tasks, up from 10% the year before. That is not a reason to read a script into HireVue. It is a reason employers are cutting the round.

So-what: if a scheme still sends a recorded video, treat it as a pass/fail cull after the test, not as the interview that gets you hired. If a scheme has dropped video and gone test-then-live, believe them. Do not spend a week lighting a bedroom for a round that no longer exists. Get 10 free matches so you know which employers are even in your pile before you buy a ring light.

JobPing's 13883 live early-career roles this week include mid-market seats that never bought HireVue. A ten-person operator will ask you to a call. That call is the assessment centre. Do not prep it as a one-way video.

Strengths-Based Video Interviews Punish Rehearsed STAR Stories

London Stock Exchange Group uses strengths-based video interviews on its graduate process and tells candidates that competency stories about past internships are not enough on their own. That is the opposite of the STAR card most careers services still hand out for HireVue.

LSEG wants examples that are "most authentic to you," professional or personal, and warns against forcing rehearsed answers to fit.

The 2022 Prospects Luminate cut of ISE methods is still the best public split: 68% of employers still used a competency lens, 56% used a strengths-based perspective, 35% used a values exercise. Those are overlapping, not rival camps. A bank can send a competency application form, a strengths video, and a competency assessment centre. Using one STAR story in all three is how people sound like a PDF.

A competency question wants evidence you have done the thing: "Tell us about a time you influenced a stakeholder." A strengths question wants whether the thing energises you: "When are you at your best with incomplete data?" Reading a memorised internship story into the second question is the fail ISE is now calling inauthentic. The camera also records the pause, the eye-line, and the cut to another tab. ISE's cheating note is about undisclosed AI in interviews. A visible glance at a second screen is enough for some reviewers to stop the tape.

HireVue, and the in-house clones banks build on Workday, usually give you 30–60 seconds to prepare and 90–180 seconds to answer, with two takes or none. That is a broadcast, not a conversation. You cannot recover a dead first sentence. You can recover a dead first sentence in a live interview. Practise out loud to a timer. Do not practise by typing answers into ChatGPT and performing them. Forty-five percent of ISE employers gave applicants no guidance on when AI was allowed. Absence of a ban is not a suggestion to script the take.

The 48-hour window in London finance still applies. A video invite often lands in the same week as the numerical test. Tailor the CV before you apply so you are not rewriting bullets the night the recording opens. CV Ping against that JD, then submit, then practise the strengths questions the firm published. A generic CV that already failed ATS never reaches this round.

Assessment Centres Still Decide the Offer After the Automated Cull

ISE's own automation data puts in-person interviews, group tasks, role play, and case studies at 94–100% human-led, which means the Fast Stream Assessment Centre, a Big Four assessment day, and a bank superday are still the rooms where a person decides whether to offer you the job. The recorded video did not decide. The recording only let you into that room.

A typical UK graduate assessment centre is a day: a case or in-tray, a group exercise, a written task, one or two interviews, sometimes a role play. Fast Stream's FSAC is the public-sector version of the same product, with a different competency framework and a reputation for punishing people who dominate the group exercise. Consulting assessment days swap the in-tray for a case. Banks swap it for a markets or deal discussion. The furniture changes. The fact that a human is scoring you does not.

That is why employers can afford to be sentimental about "the assessment centre experience" while automating everything before it. ISE says 62% of employers expect to use AI in recruitment and 70% expect more automation in selection over five years. They are not talking about replacing the partner who sits in the afternoon interview. They are talking about not watching 140 videos. The offer meeting stays expensive on purpose.

If you reach the day, the people in the room have already survived SHL and, where it still exists, the recording. You are no longer competing with 140. You are competing with the eight who can hold a conversation, share a whiteboard, and not talk over the quiet person in the group task. Dominating the group exercise is a classic reject. Freezing is also a reject. The score is usually "contribution, not airtime."

For international graduates the room does not create a visa. Fewer than 8% of UK early-career roles in JobPing's database explicitly flag Skilled Worker sponsorship. Confirm sponsorship before you book a train to an assessment centre you cannot convert into a job. The visa hub is the country cut.

That is why we built JobPing as a loop. The 48-hour invite is useless if the scheme cannot hire you, or if the CV that got you the invite will fail the keyword screen on the next one. Get 10 free matches, then CV Ping before you light a bedroom or book a train.

What Gets You Rejected on a Recorded Video Versus a Group Exercise

A recorded video rejects you for a dead first sentence, a second-screen glance, a competency story stuffed into a strengths question, or an AI-smooth take a reviewer no longer trusts; a group exercise rejects you for taking all the airtime, for saying nothing, or for ignoring the brief. They fail different people. Prep them as different exams.

Treat the video as the exam if:

  • The invite is one-way, timed, and names HireVue, Sonru, or a Workday video step
  • The firm still runs video after the test (many banks and corporates)
  • You have 48 hours. That is enough to practise out loud. It is not enough to rewrite your CV

Treat the assessment centre as the exam if:

  • You already have a date, a building, and a timetable
  • The firm dropped video and went test-then-day (take ISE at its word)
  • The employer is a ten-person operator whose "assessment centre" is a two-hour interview. Same product, smaller room

Do not skip video practice because ISE says some employers are dropping the round. Do not skip group-exercise practice because you "interview well." The people who "interview well" on tape and then talk over everyone in the case are a known type. Recruiters have a shorthand for them. You do not want it.

How to Prep the Video Round and the Assessment Centre as Different Products

Prep the recording as a timed broadcast and the assessment centre as a day of live exams, because a perfect STAR card that wins neither is how people spend October performing the same story at every stage. Sequence the work to the invite in your inbox.

  1. Do not start with video if you have not shortlisted. Get 10 free matches filtered by career path, city, and visa status. A ring light for a scheme you cannot enter on subject or class grounds is theatre. Read the subject filter and the 2:1 filter first.
  2. Sit the automated test before you obsess about lighting. ISE put numerical, SJT, and verbal at the front of the process for a reason. A filmed answer nobody watches is not an application.
  3. If a recorded video arrives, practise strengths questions out loud to a timer. LSEG's warning is the brief: do not force a rehearsed internship into a motivation question. Two recorded practice takes on your phone beat a script.
  4. If an assessment-centre date arrives, prep the group exercise and the case, not another video. One page of the firm's competency or strengths language. One practised structure for a case. One habit: invite the quiet person in before the twenty-minute mark.
  5. Tailor the CV the week you apply, not the night before FSAC. CV Ping against that JD. Free accounts include 3 full analyses; Premium is unlimited with 15 matches a week for €7/month. The generic-CV piece is the craft; this piece is the round.
  6. If you need sponsorship, confirm it before you book the train. Fewer than 8% of UK early-career roles flag Skilled Worker sponsorship. A polished assessment day at a non-sponsor is still a wasted Saturday.

FAQ

Is a video interview more important than an assessment centre? No. The video is a cull. ISE data shows interpersonal stages stay almost entirely human, and some employers are reducing video because of AI-scripted answers. The assessment centre is where the offer is usually decided. You still have to survive the cull.

Are employers dropping HireVue? Some are. ISE's application-explosion briefing lists removing or reducing video interviews as an adaptation to record volumes and AI scripting. Many banks and corporates still send a recorded round after the test. Read the email, not a 2024 forum thread.

What is a strengths-based video interview? A recording that scores what energises you, not only what you have done. LSEG's graduate guidance contrasts it with competency interviews that lean on past experience. A memorised STAR story is the wrong tool.

What fails a group exercise? Taking all the airtime, saying nothing, or ignoring the brief. Contribution without domination is the usual score. Fast Stream Assessment Centres have a long reputation for punishing the first two.

Can I use ChatGPT to write video answers? ISE found 61% of employers who saw cheating named undisclosed AI in interviews as the most common form. Almost half of employers gave no applicant guidance. That is not permission. A smooth, generic take is also a reject even when nobody proves a model wrote it.

How does this change if I am applying outside the milkround? Smaller employers often skip HireVue and go straight to a live conversation. That conversation is the assessment centre. Prep it as a human room, not as a one-way video.
